The “Sema” ceremony is the inspiration of Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi (1207-1273) more commonly known as Rumi the Persian poet, theologian, and Sufi mystic. "Sema" has seven parts, each part symbolising a stage on the mystic journey to Ascension and based on the fact that everything in this life is revolving, from the smallest particles to the stars in the sky. The dervishes align their minds to join with this shared revolution of all other beings.
Revolving around the heart from right to left, with right hand raised upwards to receive and left hand downwards to towards the earth, they turn towards the truth, letting go of the ego and embracing all that is with affection and love.
The tall headdress represents the ego’s tombstone and the white skirt the ego’s shroud.
The ceremony was mesmerising and incredibly moving and peaceful, I could feel the love. It was not what I expected. After the ceremony two of the dervishes came back to turn for us so that we could take photos, when I looked at my photos later I was not surprised to see several orbs around the dervishes.
